Aim at the fin, then finish up close
Throw a dagger at the fin sticking out above the water. A dagger that enters the water disappears. Once the hit draws the fish close, use your main melee weapon to finish it and obtain the fish entry.

Start with a visible fish and throwing daggers
This method starts when you can already see a fish in the water and have throwing daggers available. If you still need the early throwing-weapon pickup, follow the Dagger Belt step at the island wreck.
Keep your shot above the waterline
- Aim above the waterline. Target the exposed fin.
- A throw into the water disappears. Adjust your aim rather than repeating the same underwater shot.
The community answer about the missing fish explains the common failure: daggers disappear in the water. Line up the exposed fin instead of aiming at the submerged body.
If the same shot keeps vanishing, adjust the aim toward the part of the fin above the surface before throwing again.
Let it approach, then use your main weapon
- Hit the exposed fin with a throwing dagger.
- Let the fish come close enough to reach with your main weapon.
- Finish it in melee and check the bestiary entry.
A second Demo discussion also recommends using throwing daggers to bring the fish close; the questioner confirms that the fish was the entry they were missing.
If melee hits feel weak, revisit attack-bar timing. If you need to recover before another attempt, Rest at a blue crystal.
